Airports with family lanes and play areas

Quick answer: four airports in our check publish a family security lane on their official site: Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Lisbon and Istanbul. Heathrow mentions a family lane at Terminal 5 on its blog, while its main guidance points families to paid Fast Track. Schiphol has no family lane but lets you book a free security time slot. For long layovers with young kids, Changi, Doha, Istanbul and Heathrow all have play areas airside.

Europe

Madrid-Barajas. Aena says the security checkpoints in all terminals have priority access for passengers with children. T2 has a kids' zone with a nursing room where you can change, warm food or settle a baby in a cot; children must stay with an adult (Aena, checked 2026-11-01). Madrid is the most common long-haul arrival point from Latin America, so the lane helps on the connection too.

Barcelona-El Prat. Free priority access for passengers with children at both terminals (T1 floor 3, T2 floor 1), play areas spread across boarding zones, two nursing rooms, free pushchair loans in Schengen boarding areas, and baggage trolleys fitted with a baby seat on request, subject to availability (Aena, checked 2026-11-01).

Lisbon. ANA runs a dedicated lane for families and priority passengers at security, a playground for ages 2 to 7 capped at seven children at a time, and a family space with sofas and a microwave (ANA, checked 2026-11-01).

Heathrow. Every terminal has a free, unsupervised Stay & Play area after security, open 06:00 to 21:00 (Heathrow, checked 2026-11-01). Fast Track is paid and infants need their own booking (Heathrow Fast Track, checked 2026-11-01). A Heathrow blog post on Terminal 5 describes a family check-in area and an allocated family lane (Heathrow blog, checked 2026-11-01); the main guidance does not promise it year-round, so ask on arrival.

Schiphol. No queue priority for children, but a free 15-minute security slot with its own lane, bookable from three days before the flight for groups of up to 10 (Schiphol, checked 2026-11-01). Upstairs in Lounge 2 (first floor), the free Kids Playground lets children climb in and around a real plane (Schiphol, checked 2026-11-01).

Middle East and Asia hubs

Istanbul. Family First passes at security for families with children aged 0 to 5, priority family parking, free strollers from passport control to the gate for those who checked their own, and a free children's train in domestic departures (iGA, checked 2026-11-01). International playgrounds include gates A6, B4, D2 and F9 (iGA playgrounds, checked 2026-11-01).

Doha. Five activity nodes for children inside the terminal, plus baby changing and a multi-sensory lounge for children with autism and other needs (Visit Qatar, checked 2026-11-01).

Dubai. In June 2023, Dubai's immigration authority announced children's passport counters in the arrival halls of DXB Terminals 1 and 2, after launching them in Terminal 3 (GDRFA, checked 2026-11-01). We found no more recent official notice, and no official age range for the counters. For the wait, Dubai Airports runs the DXB Family Zone at the B gates of Terminal 3 departures and baby care rooms in T3 departures; staff point you to the nearest one (Dubai Airports, baby care rooms, checked 2026-11-02). Emirates lends free strollers after security in T3, to be dropped at the boarding gate or on arrival (Emirates, checked 2026-11-02). We found no official family lane at security.

Singapore Changi. Air-conditioned play areas in every terminal for ages 2 to 12, some split by age, such as the T3 public B2 area for ages 2 to 5 (Changi, checked 2026-11-01). The Slide@T3 needs riders of at least 1.3 m (Level 1) or 1.1 m (Basement 2), in closed shoes (Changi, checked 2026-11-01).

Latin America

Bogotá El Dorado. Play areas sit next to the waiting lounges at piers A, B, C and D in Terminal 1 (El Dorado, checked 2026-11-01), with nursing rooms, changing tables in family restrooms and "Reading is Flying" book corners for children (El Dorado, checked 2026-11-01).

Mexico City. The AICM passenger guide lists nursing rooms in T1 (gate lounge 9) and T2 (upper-floor connector) and baby changing spaces in restrooms (AICM, checked 2026-11-01). The guide dates from 2023 and the airport is being renovated, so confirm on site.

Panama Tocumen. The airport has moved its website to tocumenaero.com. Its information page lists nursing rooms and baby changing for families, with locations on its map. It publishes no family security lane and does not detail play areas (Tocumen, checked 2026-11-02).

Getting the most out of a family lane

  • Have the stroller ready to fold and baby food easy to reach; Heathrow asks for both.
  • Baby milk and food for the journey can go through security. Aena allows the milk, water and food your baby needs during the trip (Aena, checked 2026-11-01). Staff may test it.
  • A family lane gives you room and patience, not a lighter check.
  • Many connections mean screening again. Build that into the layover.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Madrid family lane free?

Aena lists no fee for Madrid's family access, and describes Barcelona's as free. Fast Track is a separate, paid service.

Up to what age does the family lane apply?

Each airport decides. Istanbul limits Family First to children aged 0 to 5. Madrid and Barcelona refer to passengers with children without stating an age.

Which airport is best for a long layover with kids?

For play areas after security, Changi, Doha, Istanbul and Heathrow each have several. For Europe-bound trips, Madrid and Barcelona combine family lanes with kids' zones.

Can the stroller go through security?

Yes. At Heathrow, pushchairs, car seats and baby carriers are screened, usually folded. Avianca and Iberia, for example, let you take it to the aircraft door; check with your airline.
