Pulsar or ProtegeTuViaje: what actually changes when you need a doctor abroad?
ProtegeTuViaje.com says it is based in Santiago de Chile, with a commercial presence in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela [2]. Its conditions document, updated August 2026, is the one that governs a plan. This page reads that document beside Pulsar's terms. The biggest difference today is flight delay.
Who is behind ProtegeTuViaje, and who do you deal with when something happens?
The conditions say all services in the assistance plan are covered through PROTEGE TU VIAJE S.A, a company whose main purpose is to provide medical, legal and personal assistance only in emergencies [1]. They state that the plan is not an insurance contract or policy [1]. The text we read names no other company as provider, and the "Nosotros" page does not say whether the plans come from a third party [1][2]. You deal with its Assistance Services Center, by phone numbers listed per country [1].
Pulsar is sold by Asteroid LLC in Aventura, Florida. Assistance and claims are run by MDabroad (US & UK Medical Abroad, LLC), in international medical assistance since 2000. Medical benefits are insured by the insurer named in the voucher email [9].
How big are the medical limits, and how are plans tiered?
The conditions name plans such as Pequeño, Básico, Completo, Súper, Súper Plus and Senior Exclusive, and say limits appear in the voucher [1]. Their assistance page describes three levels. The first reads "asistencia médica hasta USD 60.000"; a second adds higher amounts and dental, baggage and flight-delay cover; a third mentions cover for pre-existing conditions according to plan conditions [3]. We could not match those levels to the named plans, so this is not a plan-against-plan comparison.
Pulsar's plans are Basic USD 30,000 (EUR 30,000 on Europe trips), Standard USD 50,000, Superior USD 100,000 and Prime USD 150,000, per person [9].
What about pre-existing conditions?
Their definition: "Todo proceso físico patológico que reconozca un origen [...] anterior a la fecha de inicio de la vigencia del plan" [English: any pathological physical process with an origin before the plan start date] (Section I, definitions) [1]. The examples listed include kidney or gallstones, arterial obstructions, asthma, HIV, blood pressure problems, glaucoma and cataracts [1]. The document says other plans can include emergency assistance for pre-existing conditions, with requirements such as 12 months of stability and physician clearance [1].
Pulsar does not cover pre-existing conditions, except an acute heart attack or stroke, covered whatever your history. An optional upgrade (USD 15,000 or 20,000) covers acute episodes of listed chronic conditions [9].
What are the age and trip-length rules?
The beneficiary is covered up to and including the anniversary of the age limit for the plan type purchased, and loses all rights from that date (Section II) [1]. The conditions do not give one age for all plans, and they name a Senior Exclusive plan [1]. Short trips have a maximum validity of 90 consecutive days; long stay plans run 365 consecutive days; there are also annual multi-trip and student plans [1].
Pulsar: maximum age 85 at purchase; from 65 the medical limit applies at 75 percent; maximum trip 180 days [9].
Is there a deductible?
We found no deductible in their conditions [1]. Pulsar's plans sold on the site have no deductible [9].
How do you get care, and is there telemedicine?
You must report the event within 24 hours. Missing that deadline means automatic loss of any right to claim [1]. The medical evaluation may be done by video or phone consultation through a telemedicine service designated by PROTEGE TU VIAJE S.A. [1].
At Pulsar, people answer 24/7 by phone (+1 786 257 0040) and WhatsApp (+1 786 414 1901) in Spanish, English or Portuguese. Call first, and in network the clinic bills Pulsar directly. Telemedicine is unlimited on every plan, with no charge per consultation and nothing counted against the medical limit [9].
How long do reimbursements take?
They publish a schedule (Section VII.3). You submit documents within 30 calendar days, counted from medical discharge or the end of treatment for medical claims, and from the event for everything else. PROTEGE TU VIAJE S.A then has 5 continuous days to ask for anything missing, 5 business days to analyze the case, and pays within 10 business days [1].
For Pulsar, check the issued plan terms for reimbursement timelines.
In what currency are you charged?
Benefit limits are shown in the voucher in US dollars or euros, depending on the plan and geography (Section VIII) [1].
Pulsar charges in your own currency (COP, MXN, PEN, CLP and others) at the prior day's market rate plus 1 percent, rounded up. Refunds are the same amount in the same currency [9].
Can you cancel and get money back?
The conditions say that before validity starts, changes and cancellations follow the flexibility option shown on the voucher, and a fixed-rate option includes no voluntary cancellations beyond what local law grants; once validity has started, there are no changes or cancellations (Section III) [1]. Their help center adds that, for payments by card or bank transfer, 100 percent of the amount is returned within 10 business days, that cash payments may carry an administrative fee depending on the country, and that the Pequeño plan has no cancellation cover and allows only a date change [4]. For Europe, you need proof of a visa denial or of cancelled tickets [4].
Pulsar: full refund within 10 days of purchase if the trip has not started and nothing was used. After that, 80 percent back or a free date change until 3 business days before cover starts [9].
What happens if your flight is delayed?
This is where the two differ today. ProtegeTuViaje offers FelizDemora: you register your flights, they are monitored, and compensation is paid automatically with no claim [5]. The conditions say you must register at least 24 hours before the flight, that it activates after 6 hours of delay, and that it pays USD 100 (Pequeño, Senior Exclusive), USD 150 (Básico) or USD 200 (Completo, Súper, Súper Plus and multi-trip plans) by bank transfer, per certificate regardless of how many passengers are affected [1]. The site says all its plans include it [5].
Pulsar reimburses reasonable expenses for delays over 12 consecutive hours (clause 38) [6]. Flight delay, with Blink Parametric: register your flight 24 hours ahead and get a lounge pass if it is delayed, live now. An automatic USD 50 payment for a delay of 2 hours or more is coming November 2026. Eligible flights per the terms on your voucher.
What do they say about sports?
The general exclusions cover training for or taking part in sports competitions and dangerous sports (Section XI, 7) [1]. An optional sports upgrade covers accidents in listed high-risk and competitive sports, up to the plan's medical limit and no more than USD 100.000 [1].
When might ProtegeTuViaje be the better choice?
- Compare available benefits and check the applicable Pulsar voucher terms.
- You live in one of the countries where they report a commercial presence: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay or Venezuela [2].
- You compete in sports and want a sports upgrade that covers competitions [1].
- You want a plan with a USD 60.000 medical figure, between Pulsar's Standard and Superior [3][9].
How do I choose?
- Check whether the document calls the plan insurance or assistance, and who is named as the provider.
- Compare the delay trigger in hours and the payment, and whether you must register flights in advance.
- Read the deadline to notify and the deadline to submit documents, then the promised payment time.
- If the help center and the conditions differ on refunds, ask in writing which governs before you pay.
