Pulsar or Chubb's travel insurance in Colombia: what actually changes when you need a doctor abroad?
Chubb sells its international travel policy directly to people in Colombia, online, and issued as an instant digital policy [3]. It is built as an accident policy with medical expenses and a set of add-ons, which matters when you read the clauses. This page sets Chubb's published conditions next to Pulsar's, so you can compare them before you pay.
We compared Chubb's Gold plan (USD 35,000 for Latin America trips, USD 100,000 for Europe) with Pulsar's Standard (USD 50,000) and Superior (USD 100,000).
Who is behind this policy, and who answers when something happens?
The insurer named in Chubb's documents is Chubb Seguros Colombia S.A. [1][2]. The page lists a 24/7 assistance line by phone, email or WhatsApp, with numbers in Colombia (+57 601 355 7199), Spain and the United States [3]. The documents we read do not name a separate assistance provider [1][2].
Pulsar is sold by Asteroid LLC in Aventura, Florida. Assistance and claims are run by MDabroad (US & UK Medical Abroad, LLC), in international medical assistance since 2000, with 85,000+ contracted providers in 150+ countries. Medical benefits are insured by the insurer named in the voucher email [7].
How high are the medical limits, and how are the plans tiered?
Chubb's terms print emergency medical expenses by region and plan. Latin America: Silver USD 15,000, Gold USD 35,000, Platinum USD 40,000. North America: USD 80,000, 100,000 and 200,000. Europe and Rest of World: USD 50,000, 100,000 and 200,000 [2].
Pulsar prints one limit per person: USD 30,000 (Basic), USD 50,000 (Standard), USD 100,000 (Superior) and USD 150,000 (Prime). On Europe trips Basic is EUR 30,000, the Schengen minimum [7].
How do pre-existing conditions work?
Chubb's conditions exclude claims where the insured or the travel companion has a pre-existing medical condition: "QUE TENGAS UNA AFECCIÓN MÉDICA PREEXISTENTE O TU ACOMPAÑANTE DE VIAJE" (clause 2, item 22) [1]. The definition looks back "en el período de doce (12) meses inmediatamente anteriores a la fecha de emisión" for treatment, diagnosis, consultation, advice or prescribed medication (clause 9) [1].
Pulsar does not cover pre-existing conditions, with one exception: an acute heart attack or stroke is covered regardless of history. An optional upgrade (USD 15,000 or 20,000) covers acute episodes of listed chronic conditions [7].
Is there an age limit?
Chubb's terms accept travelers "Desde los 0 años hasta los 85 años más 364 días" (section 3) [2]. The documents we read do not state a reduced limit from 65 [1][2].
Pulsar sells up to age 85 at purchase. From 65, the medical limit applies at 75 percent [7]. So a 70-year-old buying Superior has USD 75,000 of medical limit.
How long can the trip be?
Chubb's terms state coverage of up to 180 calendar days (section 2) [2]. Pulsar's maximum trip is 180 days, with up to 9 travelers per quote [7].
Is there a deductible?
Chubb's conditions define an "excedente" as the first amount of a claim that you pay and Chubb does not (definition, clause 9). Neither the conditions nor the terms table print an amount [1][2]. The plans Pulsar sells on its site have no deductible [7].
How do you get care: call first, or pay and claim?
Chubb's conditions say you must report a loss "en el menor tiempo posible", and Chubb may ask for proof of the event before paying (clause 5) [1]. The emergency medical annex also lets Chubb move you to Colombia if the medical costs are likely to exceed the cost of taking you home, subject to medical opinion, or to the nearest hospital in another country (annex, clause 1) [1]. The documents we read do not describe a direct-billing procedure or a call-first rule [1][2].
With Pulsar, you call first, and at an in-network clinic the clinic bills Pulsar directly. People answer 24/7 by phone at +1 (786) 257-0040 and on WhatsApp at +1 (786) 414-1901, in Spanish, English or Portuguese. In the US, members use Aetna's network [7].
How long does a reimbursement take?
Chubb's conditions do not state a deadline for paying a claim after approval [1]. For lost baggage, the insured must report the loss to the police or the carrier within 24 hours (baggage annex) [1].
For Pulsar, check the issued plan terms for reimbursement timelines.
Is there telemedicine?
Chubb's documents we read do not mention telemedicine [1][2]. Pulsar includes unlimited telemedicine on every plan, with no charge per consultation and nothing counted against the medical limit [7].
What currency are you paid in, and can you cancel?
Chubb's terms say indemnities are paid in Colombian pesos at the TRM of the day the loss occurred (section 6) [2]. The conditions say you may revoke the contract for your individual cover by written notice, effective on the date Chubb receives it. If Chubb revokes additional covers, it must give 10 business days' notice and return unearned premium (clause 7) [1].
Pulsar charges in your own currency (COP, MXN, PEN, CLP and others) at the prior day's market rate plus 1 percent, rounded up, and refunds the same amount in the same currency. Cancellation brings a full refund within 10 days if the trip has not started and nothing was used; after that, 80 percent back or a free date change until 3 business days before cover starts [7][4].
What happens if a flight is delayed?
Chubb's table shows flight delay at USD 600 on every international plan [2], and its page describes it as compensation when a delay exceeds 6 hours [3]. In the conditions, the flight delay annex pays or reimburses lodging, meals and transport, up to the insured amount, when the delay exceeds six hours and is caused by a failure of the aircraft, a fortuitous event or force majeure affecting the aircraft or the airline; a delay publicly known 24 hours before departure is excluded [1].
Pulsar reimburses reasonable expenses for delays over 12 consecutive hours (clause 38) [4]. Flight delay, with Blink Parametric: register your flight 24 hours ahead and get a lounge pass if it is delayed, live now. An automatic USD 50 payment for a delay of 2 hours or more is coming November 2026. Eligible flights per the terms on your voucher.
Which sports are excluded?
Chubb excludes extreme sports, winter sports and adventure sports, mountaineering, whitewater rafting of grade 4 and above, and any professional practice or competition. Diving is excluded unless you hold a diving certificate or dive with an instructor, and then only to 30 meters (clause 2, item 27) [1]. Item 24 excludes accidents as a driver or passenger of motorcycles, while item 27 carves out motorcycles of 200 cc or less ridden with a Colombian license and a helmet [1]. Read the full item for your activity before you buy.
When might Chubb be the better choice?
If you want a higher ceiling, Chubb's Platinum plan shows USD 200,000 for North America, Europe and the rest of the world [2], above Pulsar's top plan of USD 150,000 [7].
If you want a product written for Colombian residents, paid in Colombian pesos and bought online with an instant digital policy, that is how Chubb describes it [2][3]. Its page also lists coverage for stolen smartphones and laptops and for family travel during a hospitalization [3], which are not part of the Pulsar facts on this page.
And for travelers from 65 up to 85, the Chubb documents we read state no reduced limit by age [1][2], while Pulsar's limit applies at 75 percent from 65 [7].
How do I choose?
- Match the limit to the region of your trip and read the plan table for that region, not the headline number.
- Read the pre-existing clause and count the look-back period.
- Ask who pays the clinic and whether you call before treatment.
- Check which currency pays claims, and where the exclusions for your sport appear.
