Pulsar or RIMAC: what actually changes when you need a doctor abroad?
RIMAC Seguros y Reaseguros sells a travel insurance in Peru with three plans, Viajero, Plus and Full, bought online. [3] RIMAC publishes two documents that matter here, the travel assistance conditions and the policy conditions. Neither prints a date or version, so we say which one each fact comes from. We compared RIMAC's Plus with Pulsar's Basic, and RIMAC's Full with Pulsar's Superior, because the medical limits match. [3][7]
Who is behind the product, and who do you deal with?
The product page and the policy conditions name RIMAC Seguros y Reaseguros. [2][3] The assistance conditions say the services of the plan are provided through RIMAC, described as a company whose main purpose is medical, legal and personal assistance services, and they define a "Central de Servicios de Asistencia" that coordinates the services. [1] Pulsar is sold by Asteroid LLC in Aventura, Florida; assistance and claims are run by MDabroad (US & UK Medical Abroad, LLC), in international medical assistance since 2000. [7]
What are the medical limits and the plans?
RIMAC's page lists Viajero with USD 15,000 of medical assistance, Plus with USD 30,000 and Full with USD 100,000. [3] The assistance conditions add that maximum limits appear on the voucher, in dollars or euros depending on plan and geographic coverage. [1] Pulsar's plans are Basic USD 30,000 (EUR 30,000 on Europe trips), Standard USD 50,000, Superior USD 100,000 and Prime USD 150,000 medical per person. [7]
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
The policy conditions exclude chronic or pre-existing illnesses "conocidas o no por el ASEGURADO, así como sus agudizaciones y consecuencias, incluso cuando las mismas aparezcan durante el viaje" [known or not to the insured, and their flare-ups and consequences, even if they appear during the trip] (Article 8, item a). [2] The assistance conditions list the same exclusion first (Article X, item 1). [1]
They also contain a benefit titled "Asistencia médica por enfermedad preexistente," up to the amount stated on the voucher, for an acute episode or unpredictable event. [1] Its condition: "el beneficiario deberá haber estado estable por más de 12 meses" [the beneficiary must have been stable for more than 12 months]. [1] Pulsar does not cover pre-existing conditions, except acute heart attack and stroke, covered regardless of history; an optional upgrade (USD 15,000 or 20,000) covers acute episodes of listed chronic conditions. [7]
What are the age limits, and what changes from 65?
The policy conditions (Article 6) insure people "desde los dieciocho (18) años de edad hasta los setenta y cinco (75) años" [from 18 to 75 years of age]. [2] The assistance conditions say benefits last until the anniversary of the age limit "según el tipo de Plan adquirido" [according to the plan acquired] and do not print that number in the text we read. [1] Their published conditions do not state a different benefit level from age 65. [1][2] Pulsar sells up to age 85 at purchase; from 65 the medical limit applies at 75 percent. [7]
How long can the trip be?
The assistance conditions (Article III) set a maximum of 90 consecutive days for short trips, 365 days for long stays, and 365 days in total for annual multi-trip plans, with 30, 45, 60 or 90 days per trip depending on the plan. [1] The published documents do not say which type each web plan is. [1][3] Pulsar's maximum is 180 days. [7]
Is there a deductible?
Neither RIMAC document we read states a deductible. [1][2] Pulsar has no deductible on the plans sold on its site. [7]
How do you get care: call first, direct billing or reimbursement?
The assistance conditions require you to contact the Central and obtain its authorization "antes de tomar cualquier iniciativa o comprometer cualquier gasto" [before taking any initiative or committing any expense] (Article VI, item 1). [1] If you could not call first, you must notify within 24 hours, and failing to do so "acarrea la pérdida automática de los derechos" [carries the automatic loss of rights]. [1] Pulsar also asks you to call first; in network the clinic bills Pulsar directly, and people answer 24/7 in Spanish, English or Portuguese. [7]
How long does reimbursement take?
Under the assistance conditions (Article VII, item 3), you have 30 continuous days from the end of the voucher to submit documents, RIMAC has 5 days to ask for missing ones, 15 business days to analyze the case, and 15 business days to pay after receiving complete data. [1] The policy conditions (Article 25) ask for claim documents within 30 days of the event and require notice within 48 hours when you use a clinic outside the network; we found no payment period for medical claims there (the 30-calendar-day payment period in that document belongs to the accidental death and invalidity clause). [2] The two documents set their deadlines differently; check which one your voucher cites. For Pulsar, check the issued plan terms for reimbursement timelines.
Is there telemedicine?
The assistance conditions list telephone and video medical guidance "sujeto a disponibilidad" [subject to availability]. [1] They do not state whether it counts against the limit. [1] On Pulsar, telemedicine is unlimited on every plan, with no charge per consultation and nothing counted against the medical limit. [7]
In what currency are you charged?
The conditions say limits are in dollars or euros (Article VIII), and that reimbursements "podrán ser abonados en moneda local" [may be paid in local currency] (Article VII, item 3). [1] The policy conditions say obligations are paid in the currency in which the coverages are expressed (Article 19). [2] Their published conditions do not state the exchange rate used. [1][2] Pulsar charges in the traveler's own currency (COP, MXN, PEN, CLP and others) at the prior day's market rate plus 1 percent, rounded up, and refunds the same amount in the same currency. [7]
What about cancellation and refunds?
The assistance conditions say that once the voucher's validity starts, the voucher is not cancelled "por ninguna razón" [for any reason] and unused days are not refundable. [1] They do not describe a refund before the start date. [1] The policy conditions let the insured end the contract with 15 calendar days' written notice (Article 16.3). [2] Pulsar refunds in full within 10 days of purchase if the trip has not started and nothing was used; afterward it returns 80 percent or offers a free date change until 3 business days before cover starts. [7]
What happens if my flight is delayed?
RIMAC reimburses hotel, meals and communications up to the plan limit when a flight is delayed more than 6 consecutive hours and there is no other transport (policy Article 9.16; assistance conditions list the same benefit). [1][2] Pulsar reimburses reasonable expenses for delays over 12 consecutive hours (clause 38). [4] Flight delay, with Blink Parametric: register your flight 24 hours ahead and get a lounge pass if it is delayed, live now. An automatic USD 50 payment for a delay of 2 hours or more is coming November 2026. Eligible flights per the terms on your voucher.
What else is distinctive in RIMAC's conditions?
The assistance conditions state that RIMAC's beneficiaries can submit delayed or cancelled flight cases to the company AirHelp, subject to AirHelp's terms. [1] Amateur sports, including recreational diving to 15 meters and skiing, have their own benefit; racing, mountaineering, bungee and similar sports are excluded. [1][2]
When might RIMAC be the better choice?
If you want a plan below USD 30,000, RIMAC's Viajero starts at USD 15,000, and Pulsar's lowest limit is USD 30,000. [3][7] If a flight delay of 6 hours matters to you, RIMAC's trigger is earlier than Pulsar's 12 hours. [1][2][4] RIMAC's page lists baggage loss up to USD 1,500 (Plus and Full) and trip cancellation up to USD 1,000 (Full); compare those lines with the Pulsar terms. [3][4] Its conditions also give a route to airline claims through AirHelp. [1]
How do I choose?
Four checks work on any product. First, find out whether you must call before any expense, and what happens if you cannot (24 hours here, with loss of rights). [1] Second, find the maximum age and where a trip type caps the days. Third, read the pre-existing clause and any stability requirement (12 months here). [1] Fourth, add up the payment timeline: days to submit, to ask for documents, to decide and to pay. [1]
