Pulsar or Terrawind Global Protection: what actually changes when you need a doctor abroad?
Terrawind Global Protection sells travel assistance plans through a site in Spanish, English and Portuguese [2] and through travel agencies [4]. The document that governs a Terrawind plan is a Spanish-language general conditions PDF in force from 1 June 2024, with some pages marked as updated in August 2025. This page reads it beside Pulsar's terms, so you can see what changes the day a doctor is involved.
Who is behind Terrawind, and who do you deal with when something happens?
The conditions state that services are provided by TERRA PROTECTION, INC., through its operations center [1]. You contact that center before getting care [1]. The conditions also say the plan is a travel assistance product and not an international medical insurance, even when it is offered through an insurance company [1]. Its last page says the contract's guarantees are underwritten by "Underwriting Partner at Panamerican Life" [1].
Pulsar is sold by Asteroid LLC in Aventura, Florida. Assistance and claims are run by MDabroad (US & UK Medical Abroad, LLC), in international medical assistance since 2000. Medical benefits are insured by the insurer named in the voucher email [5][8].
How big are the medical limits?
The conditions set no single limit: amounts are in each certificate, under "Beneficios" [1]. On the day we read it, a Terrawind page for travel agencies in Colombia listed a plan called WORLD 60K with medical coverage of USD 60.000, starting from 5 days [4]. We did not find a full tier table in the sources we read, so this is not a plan-against-plan comparison.
Pulsar's plans are Basic USD 30,000 (EUR 30,000 on Europe trips), Standard USD 50,000, Superior USD 100,000 and Prime USD 150,000, per person [8].
What about pre-existing conditions?
The general exclusions start with "Enfermedades o condiciones crónicas o enfermedades de inicio previo al viaje, congénitas o recurrentes" [chronic conditions or illnesses that began before the trip, congenital or recurrent], known or not, with the exception of clause (24) (Artículo V, 1) [1]. Clause IV.(24) pays the first medical attention for an acute crisis of such a condition, up to the amount in the voucher, and an upgrade (24b) extends it; to qualify, the condition must have been stable for more than 12 months, and the upgrade is sold up to age 74 [1]. The provider does not pay for tests aimed at evaluating illnesses that began before the trip [1]. The site lists pre-existing cover among its benefits [2].
Pulsar does not cover pre-existing conditions, except an acute heart attack or stroke, covered whatever your history. An optional upgrade (USD 15,000 or 20,000) covers acute episodes of listed chronic conditions [8].
What are the age and trip-length rules?
Cover is for holders up to 74 years plus 364 days at the start of validity. For ages 75 to 85 (plus 364 days), the plan's medical benefit ceilings are reduced by 50 percent (Artículo III, b) [1]. The conditions say the plan purchased determines this, and some plans have other age rules [1].
On length, the conditions do not state one maximum trip. Validity depends on the product bought. If a hospital stay runs past the end of validity, the provider covers up to 8 more days and USD 10,000, within the global maximum [1].
Pulsar: maximum age 85 at purchase; from 65 the medical limit applies at 75 percent; maximum trip 180 days [8].
Is there a deductible?
The conditions define a deductible (franquicia) as an amount the holder pays, applied to the total of the expenses claimed (Artículo II, k). Their published conditions do not state a single amount; it depends on the plan [1]. Pulsar's plans sold on the site have no deductible [8].
How do you get care, and is there telemedicine?
The holder must always contact the operations center before getting care: "el TITULAR siempre deberá tomar contacto previamente con la Central Operativa del PROVEEDOR" [English: the holder must always contact the provider's operations center beforehand] [1]. The event must be reported within 24 hours [1]. Care from providers the operations center assigns is at no cost to you; other expenses go through payment in your home country (Artículo XIV) [1]. For the United States, direct use of an emergency room is allowed for real emergencies [1].
Their conditions describe telephone, video or telemedicine medical guidance, depending on availability and the type of ailment [1]. The site mentions a telemedicine app [2].
At Pulsar, people answer 24/7 by phone (+1 786 257 0040) and WhatsApp (+1 786 414 1901) in Spanish, English or Portuguese. Call first, and in network the clinic bills Pulsar directly. Telemedicine is unlimited on every plan, with no charge per consultation and nothing counted against the medical limit [8].
How long do reimbursements take?
The conditions give the holder up to 12 months after the event to submit documents, "hasta 12 meses después de ocurrido el evento" [up to 12 months after the event], and payment is made within 45 business days of receiving complete documents (Artículo XIV) [1].
For Pulsar, check the issued plan terms for reimbursement timelines.
In what currency are you charged?
Their conditions say amounts are stated in US dollars, local currencies or euros, as the certificate shows, and that payments in your home country follow the central bank rules of the country where the voucher was issued, at the dollar rate used on the issue date (Artículo XIV) [1].
Pulsar charges in your own currency (COP, MXN, PEN, CLP and others) at the prior day's market rate plus 1 percent, rounded up. Refunds are the same amount in the same currency [8].
Can you cancel and get money back?
You can ask to cancel up to 24 hours before validity begins. If accepted, the amount paid is returned after retaining 20 percent, or a new voucher of the same duration can be issued instead (Artículo III, d). Once validity has started, cancellation is not available [1].
Pulsar: full refund within 10 days of purchase if the trip has not started and nothing was used. After that, 80 percent back or a free date change until 3 business days before cover starts [8].
What happens if your flight is delayed?
For a delay of six hours or more, the provider reimburses hotel, meals, communications and first-need items, only in a transit city more than 100 km from home and not at your final destination (Artículo IV, 12) [1]. On plans that include it, a separate compensation of up to USD 25 applies to delays of more than three hours on international flights, not on the flight home, and the conditions say it has no cash alternative (Artículo IV, 12.1) [1].
Pulsar reimburses reasonable expenses for delays over 12 consecutive hours (clause 38) [5]. Flight delay, with Blink Parametric: register your flight 24 hours ahead and get a lounge pass if it is delayed, live now. An automatic USD 50 payment for a delay of 2 hours or more is coming November 2026. Eligible flights per the terms on your voucher.
Is there anything distinctive in their conditions?
Three items. The plan is complementary to any health plan you already hold [1]. Multiple vouchers do not stack benefits [1]. The provider may request full medical records, including your history before the trip, to assess a claim [1]. The site also lists baggage delay, pet hotel and purchase protection among its 85+ benefits [2], and the FAQ says Terrawind offers plans that cover cancellation penalties [3].
When might Terrawind be the better choice?
- You are buying through a travel agency in Colombia that already offers a Terrawind plan, and you want the agency as your point of contact [4].
- You want a small compensation (up to USD 25) for a three-hour delay, which their conditions describe for plans that include it and Pulsar does not offer today [1][5].
- You want baggage, pet or purchase-protection benefits in the same product [2].
- You want a USD 60.000 medical limit, a figure between Pulsar's Standard and Superior [4][8].
How do I choose?
- Check whether the product is assistance or insurance, and what the document says happens if you also hold other health cover.
- Find the age rule in the document and write down the age at which your limit changes.
- Read the claims deadline and, separately, whether the provider promises a payment time.
- Check what you get back if you cancel before you travel, and until when.
