Attractions for kids: free entry and the fine print

Quick answer: several of Europe's most visited sights charge children nothing. The Prado and the Louvre are free under 18, the Rijksmuseum for 18 and under, the Sagrada Família under 11, and London's Natural History Museum galleries for everyone. Most still want a booked time slot for free tickets, and some ask for the child's ID. In Latin America, Costa Rica's national parks publish child rates and Mexico City has the Papalote children's museum.

Europe

Prado, Madrid. The museum's rules list under-18s among free admissions all day; over-14s show ID. Under-12s do not need to prove their age at the desk, and when an adult pays for the audio guide or a guided visit, the children's version is free. Useful for parents: the Collection is free for everyone in the last two hours before closing (Prado rules 2026). With small kids, a short visit then may be all you need.

Sagrada Família, Barcelona. The official price table shows €0 for under-11s on basic, guided and tower tickets (Sagrada Família).

Louvre, Paris. Under-18s go free with ID, whatever their nationality. The museum is also free for all on the first Friday of the month from 6 p.m. (except July and August) and on 14 July (Louvre). That evening can save the adults' tickets, at the cost of bigger crowds.

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Free for 18 and under, but every visitor, children included, needs a booked slot (Rijksmuseum). In peak season, walk-ups may find it full.

Natural History Museum, London. Galleries are free; a free online ticket secures entry, and some exhibitions are paid (NHM).

Disneyland Paris. Children aged 3 to 11 have a child rate and under-3s go free (Disneyland Paris, checked 2026-11-02); the Spanish ticket page adds that the child rate is not offered on dated Basic tickets (Disneyland Paris ES). Prices change by date, so compare before you buy.

Tivoli and Legoland, Denmark. At Tivoli, under-3s enter free, ages 3 to 7 have their own rate, and babies under 1 need no ride pass (Tivoli). At Legoland Billund, under-2s enter free, and the park may ask for ID to confirm the age (Legoland tickets, terms, checked 2026-11-02). Compare prices by date.

Latin America

Costa Rica's national parks. SINAC parks price adults and children, and nationals, residents and non-residents, separately. At Arenal Volcano National Park, a non-resident child pays $5.65 USD (SINAC). Each park publishes its own rate.

Machu Picchu, Peru. Online tickets are sold through the Peruvian state platform at tuboleto.cultura.pe (Machupicchu). In 2026 the minor rate (ages 3 to 17) for Peruvians, foreign residents and Andean Community citizens is S/32 on most routes and S/80 on the mountain routes and the Great Cavern; under-3s enter free and must be with an adult (El Peruano, RM 000284-2025-MC, checked 2026-11-02). For other visitors, the minor rate is S/118 for Huayna Picchu and the Great Cavern and S/70 for Huchuypicchu (El Peruano, RM 000317-2025-MC, checked 2026-11-02); we did not verify the other routes. With young children, allow a day in Cusco to adjust to the altitude.

Papalote Museo del Niño, Mexico City. An interactive museum where children learn through play (Papalote). A good plan for arrival day or a rainy afternoon.

Heading to Ecuador? Galápagos has its own entry rules; our Spanish guide covers them: Galápagos entry cover rules.

Asia

Changi, Singapore. Changi says The Slide@T3 is the tallest airport slide anywhere. Riders need 1.3 m for Level 1 or 1.1 m for Basement 2, and closed shoes; no sandals or Crocs (Changi). Play areas are in the airports guide.

Making free entry work

  • Book anyway. Free does not mean no reservation.
  • Bring the child's passport in case they ask for proof of age.
  • One museum a day. Two good hours beat five tired ones.
  • Use free adult hours where they exist, such as the Prado's last two hours.
  • Save on transport too. Switzerland's Junior Travelcard is in the countries guide.

If a fall or fever interrupts the day, what to do if you get sick abroad tells you where to start.

Frequently asked questions

Do foreign children also get free entry at the Louvre and the Prado?

Yes. The Louvre states free under-18 entry applies to every nationality, and the Prado's rules do not limit it to residents. At the Prado, ID is required from age 14.

Do I need to book if my child's ticket is free?

Often yes. The Rijksmuseum requires a slot for every visitor, and the Louvre recommends one.

At what age do children pay at Tivoli?

Under-3s enter free. Ages 3 to 7 pay a child rate, and under-1s need no ride pass.

Which Latin American attractions have child rates?

Costa Rica's national parks publish child rates, such as $5.65 USD for non-residents at Arenal Volcano. For Machu Picchu, buy only on the official platform.
