Travel insurance for Italy
Italy is in the Schengen Area. The figure you will see quoted is EUR 30,000 of medical cover. Either way the question worth answering is what a medical problem there would actually cost you.
What we would take
Our Superior plan, USD 100,000 medical. It clears the Schengen figure more than three times over and leaves room for a hospital stay rather than just a visa stamp.
What to check in any product, ours included
- The medical limit, and whether the transfer and repatriation sit inside or outside it.
- Whether you pay the clinic and claim back, or the operator pays the clinic directly.
- The pre-existing conditions clause, and what it costs to add cover.
- The deadline for notifying a claim. Ours is 24 hours for the event and 60 days for documents.
- Who answers the phone at 3 a.m., and in which language.
Questions
Is travel insurance mandatory for Italy?
Italy is in the Schengen Area, and the rule commonly cited for visa applicants is medical cover of at least EUR 30,000. Travellers from visa-exempt countries are not normally asked for proof at the border. We label this ESTIMATED rather than EXACT: check your consulate, because rules change and ours is not the authoritative source.
How much cover do I need for Italy?
Enough to clear the EUR 30,000 figure with real room on top; a limit that only just meets a visa threshold does not pay for a hospital stay.
What does it cost?
For a 11 day trip, one traveller aged 34, our Superior plan is USD 39.82, about USD 3.62 a day. Priced 2026-10-16 from the live rate table.
